Environmentally Friendly Operating Practices
- Seasonal slip and mooring contracts include verbiage that requires guests to park at the inland Taylor Point facility (serviced by our courtesy shuttle) rather than the public parking lot, thus reducing oils that would otherwise enter the bay
- State of the art dustless sanding equipment is employed at each sanding facility
- Oil response equipment is stored at the fuel dock, ready if needed, and checked weekly
- MARINA WORK BOATS: To date, we have replaced all 6 of our 6 traditionally “smoky” 2-stroke motors for new, low-emission Honda 4-stroke environmentally friendly motors.
- We embrace legislation for sewage management as part of Narragansett Bay’s “No Discharge”’ policy
- PUMP-OUT VESSEL: In 1997 we purchased a boat to pump holding tank sewage from the boats in our marina facilit, the first in lower Narragansett Bay. Since, we have encouraged its use by offering this service free of charge. Activity of this vessel has now grown to exceed 24,000 gallons annually. This vessel was also loaned at no charge to the town of New Shoreham to assist with an overload situation at the end of July 4th weekend 2003.
- In 2004 we purchased a portable pump-out waste system, now available for pier use, boat yard use, and emergencies
In 2006 we expanded our pier sewage holding tank pump-out system to include a floating dock, pump, and an additional connection via permission of CRMC- Conanicut Marine Services is a participating dealer in the USEPA New England Clean Engine Program
Recycling & Energy Conservation
- Shrink wrap recycling since the mid-1990’s
- Conveniently located recycling containers at the Marina facility; encouraged continuous use
- Recycling fuel filters, scrap metals, and spent florescent lamps and bulbs
- Waste oil burner is used to provide heat at the Mechanic Shop
- Participation in RISE energy evaluation replacing light fixtures with more energy efficient units
- TOXIC USE REDUCTION: Yard personnel uses non-toxic anti-freeze to winterize all boats in our boat yard
Storm Water Management
CMS has demonstrated continuous environmental awareness by pursuing the following ongoing action plan to minimize the impacts of storm water. The actions below follow our Best Management Practices and have been in practice since the early 1990’s.
- Maintenance of wide vegetated buffer areas surrounding the Taylor Point yard facility
- Berms and swales are maintained to manage water flows
- Generous grassy areas are maintained to reduced sheet flow
- Pervious gravel with shell surfaces are maintained in drive areas
- Rain waters from roof downspouts are directed to crushed stone and grassy areas where possible
- All work is performed at specific indoor work areas
- Trap system/trench drains contain and minimize particulates and floor dust from leaving work bays
- Petroleum and hazardous waste containment and management
- A rainwater recycling system captures 9,500 square feet of roof runoff and directs that flow to a large holding tank for future wash water, therefore reducing sheet flow, runoff and town water usage
- Consistently practices environmentally friendly bottom washing proceedures
- Language in our guests’ winter and summer contracts promotes environmental awareness
